I began teaching during my undergraduate studies, initially starting out as a double major in performance and education. In a short time, I realized how deeply I loved working one on one with students, which led me to pursue performance full time and teach in my private studio. Once I moved to California, I began expanding my teaching to music schools (Yamaha) and have continued to work with students in a diverse array of settings (private studio, music schools, high schools, university). I am an energetic woodwind multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator born and raised in Philadelphia, always open to musical opportunities regardless of the style. Since graduating from Temple University Boyer College of Music in 2021, I've been hard at work leading my solo fusion jazz project, GPS (Gabe Preston Sounds or Galactic Prism Sounds), with our debut album [to the stratosphere] currently available on all streaming platforms and a new album in the works later this year. My methods vary greatly depending on the student's goals and experience. Through the first few years of study, an emphasis on the fundamentals of music and instrumental skills is required. I couple these with the development of repertoire that fits the needs and goals of that student. Read More

A Bachelor of Music obtained from Washburn University (Topeka, KS) and a Master of Music from Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI). I have had the honor of studying and learning from some of the best flute players across the country, and love that I can take the knowledge from those amazing players and pass them on to my students. As a musician and teacher, I primarily view music as one means of artistic self-expression. In my students journey of self-expression, I will help them to learn music history, music theory, and different musical cultures which can influence their perspective on the world around them, as well as how they see themselves. Through music I teach self-discipline, patience, and good practice methods while learning the flute. In my studio, I teach the typical cannon flute repertoire while encouraging students to find a piece, no matter what style or genre, they would like to learn each quarter. Read More

I hope to work with students in the areas they want to focus on while also providing materials for overall musical development. If a student wants to work on one specific style, be it classical, jazz, or pop oriented music, I will show them the music, materials, and methods required for mastery in that subject. Along with this subject-specific teaching, I will also teach about the history of the flute and all styles that it might be used in. Read More
