For beginners who are children, I usually start with the Alfred Series. This series will determine the capabilities of the student early on. I pay attention to the student's progress and once I feel they can move on to solo repertoire appropriate for recitals, I will move them down that path. For adults, I use the adult books from the Alfred Series, but I also use the UK piano grade system. Read More

I start each student with the Frances Clark Series. This is terrific in introducing all musical components to the learner. It starts off right away using ALL the notes on the piano. Black notes are used exclusively in some repertoire. Each building block is built upon the next and it just nicely adds , in a non-threatening way to what the student has learned before. Method books are a great structured way to quickly get confident on an instrument, however they don't often encourage listening skills or creativity.
