Born and raised in Houston, Texas, I revealed great promise as a musician at an early age. Moving to New York in 1983, I became the first African American piano player to play for the Tony Award-winning production of “CATS” at the tender age of 16-years old. After a critically acclaimed 3-year run on Broadway, I returned to Houston and shortly thereafter earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Texas Southern University in Houston, the same prestigious program that produced Kirk Whalum, Yolanda Adams and Lonnie Smith. My teaching style is very laidback yet focused. I'm still a student myself so I know that my students might not have time to practice every day, but at the same time, you've got to practice consistently to see results. I focus on trying to get those consistent results while still making sure my students have fun in the process. One of the most rewarding things about music is finally learning a song you've been trying to learn for a while or realizing how far you've come, and I know I can help my students reach that fulfilling point. My teaching experience began in my early days of learning music. I was able to learn and find a method of madness to fit whichever person was asking me to show them how to play what I play. Although I was young, I was eager to see the results of excitement from a friend or cousin learning the art of music in the simplest ways. I feel that music is the ultimate form of expression, and I try to make my foundation as limitless as possible. Growth is the main goal for me and my students.
