I found I had a gift for hearing music and playing the drums without any training. I've been teaching private music lessons since I first started college in 2004. I've taught at community centers, afterschool programs, and music stores since graduating in 2008, and started my own home studio about 2 years ago. I like to teach the rudiments, as the fundamentals of music and of one's instrument provide the solid base upon which all else is built, though I also stress creativity for all my students. Teaching students also helps me to become a better musician. Sometimes a student can teach me something about myself either as a teacher, drummer or even as a person. I strive to remain open and adaptable to each student's personality and playing style. I take a relaxed, focused approach to discipline so as to keep a positive environment and a positive connection to the instrument. I think it's important to set goals high, and then break it down into more realistic stepping stones to get there.
