My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. For me, enjoyment as well as developing proper, healthy technique is key. This means that student may have to do more gritty work than with other teachers, but this pays off as they get to tackle more challenging rep and ultimately can connect skills to repertoire more quickly. However, I always like to meet students where they're at. If they want to learn how to play their favorite pop song on piano, or want to audition for their local theater's musical theater production, my priority will always be teaching in ways that the student feels is relevant to their goals and interests. What kinds of music do they want to play, and why? (For instance: for fun; accompanying themselves singing; performing in front of people; becoming professional.) Nothing is more satisfying than seeing students passionately pursue and succeed in the musical goals they set for themselves. I encourage students to set smaller, individual goals that can help them reach the larger goals they may have. Each student is unique and all students deserve to learn in the mode or format that is most effective.
