For children and beginners, it is important that the fundamentals are in place, therefore I tend to spend more time on musicianship skills and music theory. I still have that student and many more now and have a very high retention rate and am an upbeat, positive teacher that students enjoy coming back to. I grew up with loving and compassionate teachers and family members.  It's my job as a human being to offer that same level of respect and compassion. I typically perform an assessment with every individual during the first lesson. Depending on goals, I will recommend curriculum to achieve the desired results. If a classical approach is desired, I use the Alfred's Basic Piano series and the Hal Leonard method for guitar, along with scale and chord theory literature depending on the level of the student.
