New students should already be able to read music well enough to pick out a melody on a keyboard/piano. I believe in giving the student considerable freedom in choosing music that will not only benefit them technically, but inspire them. The first few lessons are spent in assessing the students voice: range, voice type, technical strengths and weaknesses,etc. The new student is also encouraged to bring in some music they already know. I have been singing since I was 6, playing trumpet since I was 10, and I picked up guitar in my early 20's. I am now 49 and have taught voice, guitar, trumpet for over 7 years from my cozy home. I have been part of many musical ensembles (in many genres) in my 30 year career and have session work that's currently located in the Seattle Rock Roll museum. For beginning musicians, I like to start with the very fundamentals of music theory in order to get them comfortable with reading music and understanding what they are doing. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons.
