For beginning students are are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Student Piano Library series for younger students and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for pre-teen/teenagers. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Students regularly give feedback on the music they are making, as well as any new ways they think I might be helpful to them. I use Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory to help inform me of the students learning style. My goal is to nurture each students musical process. After carefully assessing each of my students, and determining whether or not he or she are beginners, intermediate or advanced, I start them in the lesson book that is according to the level they are at. I teach from Alfred's Piano Course, but if my student has a piano book already, it is not a problem to teach from that series. Nothing is more important than seeing all my students sing as well as they can. All my stuedents progress at there own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for all my students at each lesson. I create a positive atmosphere and relaxing one . I alway acknowledge how well my students do at there lesson . I am a middle school band director that has over 20 years experience. I love sharing my love of music. I graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Education. I also have a Masters of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Instrumental/Choral Education.
