Upon graduating I traveled throughout Europe and the USA teaching and performing for both churches and productions both classical and musical theatre. My methods depend heavily on the age of the student and the level of student I am working with. An example would be the beginner level. In 2004 Icompleted my bachelor's degree in vocal performance with a concentration in opera from Shenandoah University (so much more engaged, excited, and subsequently successful than I was in my first college experience!). While taking a course about the anatomy and physiology of singing, I found a perfect marriage of my analytical background/skills and my passion for developing people. My favorite part about teaching music is the look on a student's face when something finally clicks. The most important part of my music classes is that my students are having fun as they're learning. I want them to feel safe and comfortable, especially in making mistakes. Mistakes are a big part of the learning process, especially when you're working with something as tricky as your voice. I teach breath, posture, resonance, placement and help students get over their mental hurdles to sing their best. When they are getting the basics, I will introduce music of their favorite styles into lessons and we will work on technique seperately and through these repertoire selections. At the end of each lesson, I will give students homework and three to five goals for the week. I give them a very clear idea of what they need to do at home to keep progress moving forward. I am a very detail oriented teacher. Once a student gets a new piece of music I like for them to gain a general idea of how the music goes. We then begin to do more specific work.
