I have privately taught students from ages five to 56. Since I recently came out of college, I have about one year of experience teaching students part time. I also have experience teaching groups of elementary school students the violin. I encourage students to practice a certain number of hours every day according to his or her playing level. Unless requested otherwise, I primarily work with the Suzuki Method. For those unfamiliar, this is a methodology formulated on the belief that all children are capable of learning the violin at any age and skill level. This method works with play learning, ear training, and instilling a musicality from a young age. I augment these Suzuki books with other exercises, depending on the skill level of the student. I have taught privately for over five years. Starting in college, I taught several students on violin before making piano my primary instrument. Since graduating from college, I have continued with my private studio in additional to expanding my work with local public schools and youth choirs. I have experience coaching students for college auditions and solo ensemble at the local and state level. My belief is that performed music should be fun for the performer as well as the audience. I will always give my best effort when I teach but students are also required to put in effort if they want to learn and become passionate about music. I encourage my students to have regular practice routines but make sure they are not overwhelmed. When I teach I also like to ask my students questions (such as how much bow do you need for this note? or what is the best approach to make this phrase more expressive with your left-hand?) so that students can learn to come up with solutions by themselves and can feel comfortable practicing without my always being there to guide them. I teach traditional Appalachian/Old Time and Irish fiddle in a fun, learn-by-ear style that's pretty accessible to anyone beginning or more advanced. As a lifetime fiddler player and music historian, I provide a cultural and and musicological background to a wide array of folk traditions in the U.S. and throughout the world. I use traditional method for the students who like to pursue classical music and I teach modern music for those who are not so interested in classical music. Even though I use Suzuki method for violin, I emphasize sight reading and theory. For Suzuki students, I encourage them to memorize whole book and perform before move onto next level. I try to cater to the each student's particular needs. For beginning students that are children I typically start with the Essential Elements Strings Book 1 in combination with Suzuki first book. As every student progresses at a different pace, I adjust my teaching curriculum accordingly.
