I do this myself without straining the student. Gradually, the student begins to naturally hold the instrument. From this point on, we gradually begin to play songs on our own. Children are eager to play because it is easy and interesting for them. With older children who are already playing, there are other tasks. Playing an instrument is almost like training for an athletic sport; it is important that the body is properly engaged safely in order to produce a beautiful sound and prevent injury. Injury has been a concern amongst string players, and tension tends to develop in the body in ways we don't even realize until something goes wrong. With this in mind as well as my teaching method, I encourage my students to develop an awareness of the body as well as good thinking processes to ensure that they have a healthy perspective on their own progress and relieve any tension that could possibly manifest in the body. My teaching style is a balance of a casual and relaxed attitude, and an environment that nonetheless encourages excellence and achievement to the highest level possible. I like to establish a friendly and fun atmosphere where the student feels at ease, but always help my students set goals, and hold them to standards of excellence. I also recognize and value that importance of a student enjoying lessons, and that may sometimes mean that s/he wishes to learn and play music not covered by the books and materials we use for lessons; thus, I encourage students to share with me any such music they want to work on, and we then incorporate it into our lessons.
