Setting goals is one of the first topics I discuss with my students, and then indicate some of the steps they need to take to achieve the goals that they set for themselves. Joe just finished playing 2nd trumpet in The National Broadway Tour of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway”. The show had its long run from October 2015 to July 2016 with performances all over the country. My approach is repertoire-based, meaning that we learn technique through the demands of particular pieces; I also teach strength-training exercises to help students develop their fullest potential on trumpet. Deriving inspiration from both classical and jazz methods, I also believe in exploring the physical capabilities and limitations of the instrument so that the player can develop a personal relationship to it.
