I began taking on students from my high school simply as a way to give back and help students with upcoming auditions. For beginner students, I will usually start with the basic fundamentals of playing the instrument. This would include tone production, articulation, flexibility, scales, arpeggios, and sight reading. Once the student has become more fluent in the technique of their instrument I will start to ask them what they want to work on and improve upon. Prior to enrolling in a music school, I developed an unexpected interest in teaching. Assisting struggling peers brought self awareness and inevitably made me, as well as the overall group better, allowing me to understand a connection between music performance and education. Time spent at the school of music, teaching or exchanging ideas and skills between peers solidified my thoughts, the exchange between student and teacher is mutually beneficial at any level. I've also found that a combination of classical and jazz studies can go a long way in helping students enjoy playing trombone and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
