I give the tools for the student to become a better player and to build confidence. If the student is participating in the schools music program I help them prepare for stage band performances or recitals. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. I also believe that the role of the teacher should the one of facilitating the student process but ultimately is the student who should dictate the style and the pace of the lesson. I believe also that listening is a really important part of music learning so I have my student listening to a lot of different music and also I play with them all the time so that they can hear and feel what is it to play together. While attending Los Angeles County High School for The Arts, I studied with jazz and trombone legends.
