I believe that it's best to learn by example, and in music this is often by demonstrating with the instrument. I will always have my instrument out to play along, or demonstrate what I am expecting. I expect my students to practice what is assigned to them so we can both have a productive session with each other, however I do understand that life happens. I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I also lead and write music for my own band. I attended Mount Hood Community College and Portland State University where I graduated with a B.S. in biology and in jazz studies. My first teaching experience began 9 years ago in my sophomore year of high school, working as a volunteer saxophone coach for middle school students in a jazz band program with the nonprofit organization Seattle JazzED. I continued my work there throughout and beyond high school as an intern, then lead intern, then an instructor with my own small ensemble (aka combo), and finally as an assistant director of the Summer Jazz Ambassador program, for which I arranged cross-era jazz curriculum in the big band format and conducted rehearsals and performances for groups of students as large as 35, ranging ages 8-18. As a 9th grader, I participated in The Bronx Borough Wide Band and played clarinet on the stage of Carnegie Hall. Later, in college, I sang in a classical chorus on the stage of Kleinhan's in Buffalo, NY with The Buffalo Philharmonic. I studiedbassoon withFrank Ruggieri of The New York Philharmonic as well. In rock, I sang with many bands and some famous artists.
