Piano Lessons in Sandy, OR

My experience teaching begins in 1997 after returning to America having spent 13 years in Africa. I began with just 4 students but after short time (and a lot of word-of-mouth recommendations) my studio grew to over 25 students. I love the piano and I would like my students to find that same love. I try to make my lessons as fun as I can and I like to share my sense of humour with my students. Read More

I have loved music as long as I can remember. As a child, I started taking piano lessons as soon as I could. I have learned a lot in the last five years of giving private lessons, and I continue to learn with each lesson. Read More

Having fun is paramount! I have a great personality, and teach in a loosely structured environment so the student feels comfortable. No matter the age or skill level, the student will find that their enthusiasm and effort will dictate their progress. I will kindly share knowledge and help give them the tools needed to succeed. Each student is different, and has different needs, and I have always been able to instinctively give what is needed for each individual lesson. Read More

For kids I find that having a large quantity of music to learn at each level gives more variety and sense of achievement, so I usually recommend beginning students have multiple books to aid in learning. For example a young piano student will study from lesson, theory, performance, and technique books each week. This yields a well-rounded student who is proud of their achievements and eager to move forward. For adults I recommend a lesson/theory combination book at least to help with reading music. Overall my work is focused on discovering music with the students and facing hurdles as we go. For voice I often let the student dictate the repertoire and support them with good technical basis. My students love a variety of singing, soft jazzy or loud and belty. For piano i prefer to use the Faber methods. I have been teaching students up to level 3. For guitar I can use hal leonard or Alfreds but the Alfreds seems to move faster. Read More

In addition to my current work as an accompanist, I've been teaching piano for 20+ years, and I love partnering with students to help them grow musically and realize their dreams. Some of my students have gone on to be professionals or teachers, and some are playing the music they love with their friends. Others are playing in their churches or in bands, and some play simply for personal enjoyment. My lesson focus depends on the student goals, but I will always include elements of theory, as it facilitates a deeper understanding of the music, allowing students the capability of creating their own music and playing in many different styles. In my time at Berklee I was able to study with George Garzone among other great minds, and helped pay my way by working as a music theory tutor in the college's Core Music Tutoring department. During school I founded a fusion/hip-hop/RB/neo-Soul group, Sangama, to bring some of my compositions to life; and performed/recorded with/co-wrote and arranged with/toured with a progressive folk group, BAERD.
