I believe that there is no one method you can use for every student. Method books can be useful but I try not to rely on them because I always found them boring if overused. I try to build lessons around styles of music that the student is interested in. It's always a balancing act trying to find the music for each student. The trick is to find music that is challenging enough for them to learn from playing it, interesting enough for them to want to pick their instrument up and practice, but not too challenging that they'll get frustrated with it.
