I think it is important to keep the oral tradition of teaching alive so most of the content during lessons will be learnt by ear, though supplemental physical materials will be used. Learning primarily by ear will help build student's listening skills which will be useful down the road when rehearsing with others or learning new tunes quickly. I believe that there is no one method you can use for every student. Method books can be useful but I try not to rely on them because I always found them boring if overused. I try to build lessons around styles of music that the student is interested in. It's always a balancing act trying to find the music for each student. The trick is to find music that is challenging enough for them to learn from playing it, interesting enough for them to want to pick their instrument up and practice, but not too challenging that they'll get frustrated with it.
