For beginning students I use instrument appropriate lesson books that teach the fundamentals of music, the instrument and progressively allows the student to feel comfortable with the sound and feel of the instrument. As they progress I begin introducing solo pieces and instruction to strengthen techniques, embouchure, sight reading, and theory abilities. I have been a performing musician since High School and have played 1000's of gigs. I have produced 100's of songs for dozens of recording artists as well as having written music for Sony and Warner Brothers. I really take a look at what the student needs to learn and what the student wants to learn because I've seen a lot of students giving up because the institution or teacher is giving to much theory and very poor practice. I try to balance those responsibilities to a point that the student will always be learning something new as long as I work on their motivation and consistency of keeping up so they can learn how to play anything they like and want.
