I typical use Alfred's, Piano Adventures or Bastien's Piano Basics for children and I emphasis doing scales/finger exercises. I also encourage ear training. For Intermediate students, I use Bach, Burmuller, and Sonatas. Though I would love to follow books to make sure no fundamental skills/knowledge will be missed, from time to time, I would love to keep students motivated by letting them to pick a song they want to learn (no matter their levels are) and we will be working on that song. The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student. I graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in Music performance, emphasis in voice. During that time I was given the opportunities to sing with some wonderful groups including Kentucky Opera Chorus, Cardinal Singers, Early Music Ensemble, and Choral Arts Society. Since moving to Colorado in 2016, I have sang with multiple quartets and ensembles, including St Martin's Chamber Choir, Gaudium Verum, Anima Chamber Ensemble as well as continuing to teach music in an individual and/or choral setting.
