I generally use the Alfred series for teaching piano. For teaching voice I may use a combination of books based on what style of music the student wants to focus on the most. For guitar, violin and clarinet, I use typical beginner books that introduce the fundamental fingerings, chords and notes for that particular instrument as well as basic music terminology. My teaching experience goes back to as soon as I finished high school. In my time at TJC I was a section leader tasked with leading rehearsals and lessons for the saxophone section. At this time I also taught as a marching band technician during the summer time for schools preparing to go to marching contests. At point I was also a substitute teacher for TISD. I took on my first student my junior year of college, and have taught students on and off since. I've taught guitar, ukulele, violin, and voice, but piano is what most of my students pursue. I do my best to make sure students are enjoying the instrument that they are handling, because if they don't enjoy it, why should they continue? I encourage performing opportunities, such as recitals and church performances, so that a student can become confident in their abilities, and be motivated to explore music beyond what I can teach them! My senior year in high school is the year that I began taking a course in classical guitar at the local junior college.
