My experience in teaching lessons has been with students who are at the beginner level progressing towards intermediate. I'm open to teaching all ages, but especially like working with teens, as it seems there is a real excitement of learning the instrument at that age. As a teacher I offer a common sense approach to teachingall instrumentsto students of all ages. For students who are new to playing; I focus first on the mechanics of playing,getting their mind to respond to what the body to best of their ability. For beginning students I tend to start with them learning the basic elements of the instruments and go over exercises that help familiarize them with the instrument. I then will start the student in the Hal Leonard's Essential ELements of books. After they have gained a grasp of the fundamentals I will start to focus more on the type of music they will learn. Lessons for young students (typically those twelve and under), an hour lesson consists of ten minutes of warm-up material (scales and rhythm concepts), fifteen minutes of content review (songs and concepts previously learned), fifteen minutes of introducing material or practice critique, and ten minutes of in-class practice. The last fifteen minutes of class is for theory building and notation comprehension (in vernacular, music-reading), and the last few minutes is for lesson review, where we discuss what we learned in the lesson and what the expectations are for the following week.
