Instruments: Trombone
My teaching style is to get the student engaged during the lesson. I want the student to have fun and develop a true passion and understanding for music and the instrument. This is one of the reasons why the musical repertoire chosen is based on the students musical preferences rather than only playing generic tunes from the method book. It is my belief that if students can take the fundamentals they learn and apply it by playing music that is actually fun and enjoyable for them, it makes the experience of lessons more effective. I enjoy teaching students of all ages. My teaching method and strategy is Applied Teaching, with a standard system of scales, etudes, and pieces from the cello literature. I am not a Suzuki instructor, but am always happy to refer a student to a Suzuki teacher. However, it is certainly possible to teach any student in either Suzuki or Applied Teaching, or both. Both are proven and effective teaching systems and techniques and are ideally highly complimentary. Read More

Ive been performing violin for almost 20 years, teaching for 15 years, and running my violin studio here in NC for the last 6 months. I currently teach for Kidsnotes in Durham, as well as running my own music studio, and I am able to teach children of any age. My specialty lies in identifying the needs of every student, and providing them with the tools, performances, and motivation they need to achieve greater heights! Read More

My curriculum is unique for each individual depending on their goals and age, however I generally start beginners out with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements for Strings, and a few of my own exercises as needed. After they have become comfortable with the violin I begin them on the Suzuki books or other solo repertoire. As the student progresses I gradually phase out Essential Elements and replace it with elementary scale books and exercise books. Read More

Lessons incorporate instruction in reading music, hand development, coordination, listening, and interpretation of various different musical styles. I make it a point to get to know each of my students as individual people, and am sincerely interested in each of them AS A WHOLE PERSON. Over the years, I have made it a point to stay in touch with many of my former students. I LOVE to hear about all of the great things that my former students are doing, ESPECIALLY all of their musical endeavors! Read More
Instruments: Voice
For beginners, I like to incorporate a basic understanding of pitch, rhythm, and theory to develop their skills as a musician. I use a variety of exercises to develop range, intonation, diction, and breath control. The warm up part of the lesson is so important because it is where I can identify strengths and expose weaknesses that can be improved. Once these have been assessed I like to select repertoire that allows the student to use their growing musicianship and skills. Read More
