I do not subscribe to a specific style of/approach to teaching. I try to ascertain what a student hopes to accomplish when possible and plot a path toward achieving that end. The goal is to make and share music. To that end, it is fair to say that some aspects of musicianship cannot be ignored. Development of technique, the ear rhythm would of the most primary importance. My style/approach to an individual will reflect my interpretation of what best suits their personality with an emphasis on the creative aspects of the art. Read More

I generally begin with Alfred's Guitar Method for very young students or adult students who are interested in learning the rudiments of music. For intermediate students we work on polishing technique. I also use the Royal College of Music series for young students who are interested in taking the ABRSM placement exam. I have adult students who also want to learn songs they enjoy listening to, so we work with tablature (numbers). Read More

I believe the most important part of lessons is the student's engagement. This is achieved by understanding what they want to play and tailoring lessons around that music. When a student is engaged in the songs they are learning, they are more motivated and excited to learn. This makes it so fun to practice that they won't be able to stop! This will amplify all their skills and they will progress much faster. Read More

My teaching style is to set a weekly goal for each student, in terms of music learning. It can be one or two songs per week, but the goal is to first learn all the necessary chords, then to learn the rhythm or the song and lastly to learn how to sing the song if they want to. The brain needs time and repeated training to be able to assimilate and learn that, and after each of these three parts are practiced separately then they start to be done together, and then it starts getting into an automatic's mode. I come from a diverse and varied musical environment. As the son of two professional musicians, I learned very early on the value of being a multi-instrumentalist. I continued on in Piano, Trumpet, and eventually guitar, all the way through college and beyond. I've been blessed with many different types of opportunities from playing weddings, to political events, fundraisers, and touring the country and internationally. I've also been fortunate enough to who have been involved in songwriting and composing for all styles of music, and many different instruments and musicians. Read More

I actually taught me first guitar lesson around senior year of high school, as I had already been playing guitar for about 5 years by that point and had garnered a small reputation as a skilled musician. I continued into college, taking on piano students focusing on theoretical analysis and fundamentals. After college I continued freelance teaching and have had many students succeed in creating and working in their own way. Read More

I truly enjoy watching my students develop a deep and important love for music. I believe the way to facilitate that is to really get to know your students. Some students benefit from organization while others do better with a more relaxed approach. I take the time to understand what each individual needs and I reflect on what I can do to meet them where they are. My lessons come with structure AND flexibility. Read More
