I'm brand new to teaching guitar, so my methods are somewhat flexible with regards to student needs. I have experience both with written music and tabs, so student preference will determine which route to take. I've always found lessons to be more effective when instructors utilized the song method; to me, introducing elements of theory through this method makes the information "stickier." For example if I have a guitar student that really wants to be a lead guitarist I will play the solo of one of there favorite songs and teach them a small part of it or all of it if they are at an advanced level.
