Teaching music requires a great deal of patience and insight. The instructor should be able to identify his/her students "comfort level" when creating/implementing an instruction program for a student. If a student feels as if he is being pushed along at a pace not suited for his learning style the student may not gain maximum benefit from the instruction. The student may also begin to lose interest in continuing with instructions. Read More

For the beginner my method is to start with the basics. You will learn how to read standard notation, and tabs. We will work on technique, and help you develop a nice tone. I also like to incorporate music that the students want to learn to make it fun and exciting as well. Even though learning the guitar can be hard work, it should also be really fun. More advanced students can bring music they are working on, either for school or for themselves and we will find a way to make it more interesting and polished. Read More

Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. In addition, I believe that the student should have control over his/her development as a musician, so I encourage my students to create a list of songs they wish to learn how to play. Read More

I subscribe to the idea that I am not a teacher, but rather a facilitator. My job is not to tell students how to become well rounded musicians, but to open doors and allow them to walk through on their own. Sharing my personal experiences can be invaluable for students, but I understand that no two students will have the same path. I don’t force-feed information, but instead bring up concepts and techniques as they pertain to the needs and desires of the student. Read More

I have had the privilege to make my leaving as both a musical performer and teacher for over thirty years. In that time I have taught and played many different styles of music. I have studied jazz with Steve Khan, classical with Jerry Willard, alternate tuned fingerstyle guitar with Peter Lang, bass with Jerry Jemmott...I am still an avid student of the craft and art of music and teaching. I love seeing and hearing my students get something and play it well. It is more rewarding than any amount of money. I encourage my students to play and perform as much as possible even if it is just in their own home. I keep the lessons well paces but I am not afraid to go off in a different direction if it suits the student. Music should be inspiring and should leave the student always wanting to learn more. I encourage them to find time to practice where ever or whenever they can. If you practice then you will improve, if you are improving then you will become even more motivated to practice. So I take a more encouraging and positive approach to teaching students. I'm very patient in the lessons themselves and I focus a lot on making sure students are capable of continuing to learn when they are at home, which the online classroom really helps a lot with also.
