I also tend to mix in some fun songs that are more well known using my own arrangements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For younger students, I typically start with showing them how to develop hand strength using a number of exercises. I then move on to scales, playing them in conjunction with 3rds and triads. Once the student has progressed I will begin to introduce chords and then connect the concepts using music theory.
