I listen and watch students and learn from them what it is they need, going from wherever they may be with the instrument, to the next step. And then beyond, all at a pace which motivates them while making them confident they have what they need to enjoy their own music. Each student is unique and I tailor what we do to their age, level of experience, musical aspirations and personality. Read More

I have been teaching guitar and piano privately for the past 10 years ago, and was even selected by the Hartt School to be a piano tutor during my junior and senior years. In my undergraduate studies I took a few courses dedicated to the art of pedagogy. Through these courses I even had the opportunity to teach in front of renown faculty and gain insight from experts. The ability to share my love of music with others is one of the most rewarding experiences, and I often feel that I learning as much from teaching as from my own studies. Read More

I encourage each student to build a list of their favorite songs. This helps them to always have something new, and something to review. It is very rewarding to see my students being able to play one of their favorite songs from beginning to end. I also help my students create their own original songs when they are inspired to do so. I like the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series, for guitar. I also use scales, picks, fingerstyle methods, and backing tracks to help get the students up to speed on a song or a riff they'd like to learn. It's important to understand the background of music, so I tend to also teach students the structure of a 12-bar blues progression and relate it to songs of yesterday and today. This enables students to get a well-rounded introduction to understanding timing, tempo, basic theory/progressions, improvisational ideas, and more! Read More

I will always listen to what students want to learn and play but at the same time will introduce them to music they aren’t familiar with. To be a great musician you have to be well rounded in different styles of music. I will also encourage students to express their emotions through what they play because I believe music can be very therapeutic and sometimes people have a hard to expressing themselves through talking. Teaching music requires a great deal of patience and insight. The instructor should be able to identify his/her students "comfort level" when creating/implementing an instruction program for a student. If a student feels as if he is being pushed along at a pace not suited for his learning style the student may not gain maximum benefit from the instruction. The student may also begin to lose interest in continuing with instructions. Read More
