I will study where you are at, whether it be beginner, advanced or anywhere in between and then I will help you develop your skill set further. One of the most important aspects of learning an instrument is practices on your own. Once you learn the lesson of the session, you will be able to take that home and memorize it for the next session. This way you will be getting the most out of each session, learning something new every time. Read More

I am experienced and proficient with most contemporary styles, rock, metal, funk, jazz, Latin, R&B, etc. I also have a thorough understanding of harmony and theory. I have taught guitar students of all levels and ages. I tailor my lessons to the students needs and have a large collection of sheet music and lessons I have written out for my students. I am a decent sight reader and I have a very good ear for transcribing songs and parts of songs for students. Read More

For teaching children I use a mix of method books (Hal Leonard and Mel Bay) and playing chords and songs so that while the student grows with fundamental information, they also have fun and play songs they know and can relate to. Once the student progesses past basic method books and can play basic songs, I move to teaching scales up and down the neck in the interest of improvising and/or more advanced songs and playing styles depending on the interest/directoin of the student. I can't remember a time when I wasn't singing, banging on the family piano, or making joyful noise with whatever could be hit, shaken or kicked. I got a guitar at age ten--blame the Beatles!-- took some lessons, learned some songs by ear, and was giving my first lesson before I was out of high school. I studied music formally at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., graduating Cum Laude. Read More

In my experience, I find the most effective method of teaching music involves a combination of traditional instruction with contemporary examples to fit the student's goals. This involves identifying what the student needs to learn and including songs the student is familiar with or enjoys demonstrating the concepts or techniques on the agenda. This both encourages the student to practice and keeps them interested in the material. Most importantly, though, is guaranteeing that the student feels motivated and acquires a sense of accomplishment. Read More

I am a huge supporter of positive reinforcement and making the lesson experience fun, comfortable, light and exploratory. I find that a student grows musically when they feel safe and welcomed to investigate, make mistakes and explore on their instrument. These experiences are what enkindle and help to maintain a student's motivation and interest in the instrument they are taking up. Lessons, though, are always cumulative and sequential so that skills are built in a logical, progressive way. Read More

In high school I won the MD Distinguished Scholarship in music performance, which allowed me to pursue a career in music performance. I attended UMBC and completed a music performance degree. Later I earned a degree in Music Education, and have been teaching in public school since 2003. I've taught privately, in after school Guitar Ensembles and Rock n Roll Workshops, as well as Life-Long Learning Classes. My students have gone on to attend Peabody Conservatory and the Berkeley School of Music. Read More
