Some of my former students are now professional pianists. I took up the flute in 1985 in order to work with my husband, a classical guitarist, and we have been making beautiful music together. I first began teaching upon the completion of my undergraduate studies in 2004. At that time the majority of my students were beginners in their first or second year of playing. By 2008 I had completed the first of my two graduate degrees in music. With this accomplishment the students seeking lessons with me generally became older, typically in the junior high and high school ages. It has been truly rewarding to see students' growth when they smile after finishing learning a song! Recently I did a practice flute challenge for my students, they were rewarded with a gift card if they completed the number of minutes they needed for 4 weeks. Having a goal in mind for them, pushed them to practice different things with a focused mindset. I believe that studying music has value far beyond simply learning an instrument. I hope that my students are inspired by music, and really feel the freedom to treat it as a creative outlet. Additionally, practicing consistently teaches discipline. Even for beginners, it is better to practice for 10 minutes every day than four hours once a week. I like for a student to look at a piece of music and then to explain to me what they think it is. Their perception is different than my perception and I can learn a lot about how to teach them based on how much they may already understand or do not understand. Understanding musical concepts and musical language is important and I emphasize getting basic concepts right immediately. It is pretty funny but works like a gem. Toshio Takahashi came up with this way to have a concrete way to teach begiiners embouchure and sound production. When the student practices with the rice, they produce a powerful"toot" the first time the headjoint reaches their lips! I like to use the Suzuki materials for flute and also mix it up with favorite duet books and classic repetoire.
