I then assume the role of a guide whenever possible, rather than an authoritarian figure, so that sudents can discover concepts for themselves vs. having the information given to them. Learning music entails much more than just playing a song. I am sure to incorporate theory, ear training, history, technique, and performance skills into the learning process. Developing tone needs to be paramount from the beginning, with using slower exercises to build the muscles and develop the ear. I will also have the student work with a tuner relatively quickly, but the ultimate goal is to develop the ear relative to other pitches, so I mostly work with drones playing in the background so that the student can play a passage with the root tone as a constant reference. I'm a firm believer in taking a student where they are and building off of their interests. Finding what a student is interested in and using that as a starting point is a part of my teaching approach. At the same time, there are some things that are critical to be taught at every level that should be incorporated on some level so there's a holistic and balanced education.
