Between 2013 and 2019, I have been a part of the highly renowned Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO), and was Principal Clarinetist of their Young Artists Orchestra from 2014-15, Symphony Orchestra from 2016-17, and their Philharmonic Orchestra from 2018-19. For beginning students I typically start with the core concepts of clarinet playing, such as sound production, proper breathing, hand/finger position, and tonguing, as well as proper instrument assembly and care. We will begin with method books such as the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced studies. Each of these methods series have multiple books that the student can progress through. Once they have reached a certain level of understanding, I will sprinkle in songs that they know and enjoy, such as Disney songs, pop songs, etc. For high school students, I start with famous repertoire for their instrument or more advanced pieces they are interested in.
