In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group. I received my Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Teacher Certification in Texas from Southern Methodist University and my Master of Music and Advanced Music Studies Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University. I have performed in many regional orchestras in the Pittsburgh area as well as with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. For all experience levels, long tones are essential to a good playing foundation. Making long tones a regular part of daily practice is key to developing a strong sound and extended lung capacity. Beginners focus on embouchure, hand position, correct fingerings, note reading, and basic rhythms. Intermediate and advanced players work on learning major and minor scales, etude studies and a variety of solo clarinet repertoire.
