In the 4th grade I ventured towards clarinet for the school band and played academically until graduating from high school, after which I continued in a less formal manner. When I was 12 I switched from piano to electric bass and have been playing it ever since in various styles from rock to jazz to classical and so on. Read More

For beginning students, I start with Essential Elements, or another comparable method if their band program uses another book. Once the student reaches middle school and has a good concept of fundamentals, we progress to the Himie Voxman Selected Studies and Duets books. For high school and advanced middle school students, I use the Baermann Division III book, the Klose Method, the Rose etudes for clarinet, as well as beginning to introduce appropriate solo repertoire. I like to make sure the learning environment is stress free and nonthreatening. I believe the psychology of music is dynamic. My goal is to get teacher and student to always be sensitive to the affective attributes that music has on the listener and the performer. Music comes alive by the interpretation of the performer and the student has the power to transmit his or her passion on any particular piece of music. Read More

My teaching style is very straight forward. I like to start every lesson with what I gave as an assignment the week before. It's always something very attainable. I also like to assign something that makes the student test their abilities. If the more challenging piece isn't quite there, they work on it again the following week. That way they can see progress in one or more areas but also understand that some music takes more work. Read More

For any beginning student, I make it a thing to always teach by ear as well as by sheet music. I find it equally important to be able to hear the notes that one can play on their instrument just like they can see the notes they can play in the process. The first two topics I will always focus on, regardless of the material, is the sound of the rhythm, eventually allowing the notes themselves to fall into place. Read More
