I am a professional classical bassist turned singer/songwriter - I also teach and play cello and general music. For over a decade I have performed with orchestras, chamber ensembles, bands, duets, trios, solo, etc... as well as teaching students of a variety of instruments and ages. Besides bass, I have taught piano, cello, pop vocals, ensemble skills, music theory, music production, and coached based on individual projects. My qualifications include my BA Degree in Cello Performance. I tutored other students in music theory, cello skills and technique as an undergraduate at Hampton University. I studied the violoncello at Levine Music school. I attended St. John DeMatha Catholic High School and Hampton University where I was principal in the Sinfonia Orchestra, Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras. I earned my Masters in Music Performance from Ball State University where I studied cello and chamber music with Dr. Peter Opie of the American Piano Trio and my Bachelors in Music Performance from the Conservatory of Shenandoah University where I studied the same with Mr. Clyde Shaw of the Audubon Quartet. I have taught a full range of ages and abilities from adult beginners to music school bound high schoolers to classes of young children and know that every student has a unique frame of reference and set of goals. For everyone, I focus on making the instrument feel as comfortable and organic as possible calling on my background with diverse movement modalities from Feldenkrais to dance to sports. In my teaching, I value being able to give students the tools they need to grow outside of lessons. In my own experience as a young cellist, I found that often students are only taught exactly what they need in order to play what is in front of them at the lesson that week, but not how to make that music better on their own. I stress the importance of sight-reading and a knowledge of music theory so that students are comfortable learning new music without relying on me. Read More
