For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More

I have had the privilege to make my leaving as both a musical performer and teacher for over thirty years. In that time I have taught and played many different styles of music. I have studied jazz with Steve Khan, classical with Jerry Willard, alternate tuned fingerstyle guitar with Peter Lang, bass with Jerry Jemmott...I am still an avid student of the craft and art of music and teaching. I try to incorporate some form of a goal to achieve, whether its a recital, audition, or just an informal get together with another student. In order to reach these goals its very important to instill proper practice techniques. So for weekly assignments, I have the student's practice scales, finger exercises, and chord changes. At each lesson, we review the previous week's assignment and address any playing challenges or difficulties. Read More

I started teaching bass 11 years ago to fellow students (music/non music students) at South Cheshire College in the North West of England. When I began my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Jazz at Middlesex University (London), I continued to teach privately. I also have experience teaching ensembles. I taught a rhythmic awareness class for 6+ people over a summer at Middlesex University. When I moved to the US I resumed my private teaching classes. Read More

You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More

I use games, contemporary and standard song repertoire, and traditional techniques to teach an instrument and my approach to music. As a NY State certified teacher I tend to use progressive music pedagogue, tiered lesson plans, and practical objectives to engage students in challenging and rewarding musical experiences. Read More

For 10 years I have held a private studio where I teach students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels including very advanced children and adult beginners. My teaching style is tailored for each student as everyone is an individual and we all learn at different rates and require different techniques. I do however have a few principals that carry over to all students. First and foremost music should be fun! Read More
