I have sung in choirs for thirty years. Over that time, I also performed in several musical plays, and took about 22 college course units in music covering piano, guitar, singing, and musicianship. I took singing lessons with Dr. Ron Shaheen over a five year period. My day job is Mandarin interpreter, and I have time enough to develop as a musician when that work is completed. I want new students to have fun and learn things that are interesting to them and benefitial to their musical journey. Children should get their beginnings in technique books and eventually music that stimulates further growth and interest; and adults, like the kids, importance is placed on technique, but even moreso, good practice techniques! As adults we quickly lose patience and revert to bad habits when it comes to practice, and that slows growth, develops poor technique and narrows our abilities to only what we currently know. I started teaching voice part-time in college, and once I graduated took on a full time position teaching privately in my home studio, student’s homes, and in schools in Round Rock. Implementing the motivation and lesson plan to practice regularly is an important skill that can be learned while still having fun. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students get really excited about reaching their goals. I consistently encourage students by giving them positive feedback about the progress they are making. I also help them push themselves to become better singers by being an inspiration and a mentor for them throughout their journey. I do feel that music is a journey, not a destination. I use goal-setting as a satisfying and organized way to break down musical lessons, which means lessons time is well spent and students have a good understanding of how and what to practice.
