There I taught in the College Preparatory Summer Program, and led classes in Theory, Rythym, Improvisation and Sight Reading. I also taught 4th and 5th grade saxophone classes at P.S. 290 in New York City through the Manhattan School of Music outreach program. All beginner students start with an Essential Elements series of books to help them understand the process of actually playing their instrument. Once this has been achieved or if the student is already past this level, I like to inquire about what the student wants to learn and improve on. I start out with the basics: Major Jazz Scales, Mixolydian Scales, and Minor Scales, Teaching students the importance of playing long tones is constantly enforced . Simultaneously, students learn how to outline the Blues, and transcribe solos. For more advance students, I teach jazz phrasing, intermediate jazz song outlining and jazz enclosures.
