Bachelor’s Degree: CUNY Hunter College - Music Performance

Awards:

2008-2009 Performed at Carnegie Hall

2014 Lead Alto Saxophone for Hunter Symphony on Gershwin's "Rhaposdy in Blue"

Overview:
I am a musician in the New York City area that enjoys advancing the art of music by performing and teaching it. I graduated from Hunter College in 2013 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Music Perfomance. I have had a lot of experience playing with big bands, orchestras, and small jazz combos in beautiful performance halls as well as smaller venues geared towards small bands. In conjunction with all of this, I have studied Guitar in varying styles from Pop, Punk Rock, Alternative, and Country as well as the music theory needed to write music in these styles. I’ve also tried my hand at Music Production and songwriting, and found that these ventures are gratifying ways to expand and grow as a musician. They’ve given me insight that I would have never received otherwise. Music is a great way to build many abilities that students will benefit from long after they’ve stopped studying and I hope to share my knowledge and experience with as many people as possible.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started when I was still in college a few years ago. I start with new students by encouraging them to practice and study music consistently, as this is the best way to internalize and truly learn the art. However, I also help students individually by focusing on the goals they are trying to accomplish in their playing. At the same time, I like for students to have fun because it is the failure of the teacher if the student is not having a good time or willing to go through the trials of becoming better at their craft. As a teacher, I encourage students to be the best they can be, not for me, but for themselves. My job as a teacher is to give the students the resource of knowledge and experience but it is the the job of the student to make and build their talent from the ground up.
METHODS USED
I adapt my lesson plan according to the student's level, interests and hobbies away from music. All beginner students start with an Essential Elements series of books to help them understand the process of actually playing their instrument. Once this has been achieved or if the student is already past this level, I like to inquire about what the student wants to learn and improve on. With this information, I give them resources or step by step guidelines to help them with their goal. This can range from solo repertoire to jazz standards that they should be familiar with if they aren't already.
LESSON STYLE
Every student responds differently to a method of teaching. Some react better to being challenged while others respond better to encouragement and positive reinforcement. It is my responsibility to find the method for each student and adapt accordingly. Another factor that is not constant among all students is their pace. I make sure that each student has goals that they can achieve at their current level, to avoid extreme frustration and to always keep them moving forward. A student may have a different reason for why they want to improve. I make sure that this goal is always on their mind when they work because I want to make sure they remember why they are going through this process: for themselves to be the best that they can be.

Jose is easygoing, patient and reliable. Both my sons enjoy their lessons with him. He checks in each week to confirm lessons a day or so beforehand, and if he's ever caught in the subway he lets us know.

My son is pretty low key and mellow. Jose's personality matches his well. He gives us updates on how our son is progressing, and is always good about confirming the weekly lesson. His personal care is also appreciated. Gave him a gift on my son's birthday!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
