I am a creative and passionate musician who recently relocated to Washington, DC. I have performed nationally and internationally as a trumpet player and enjoy playing chamber, orchestral, and solo music. Before I lived in DC, I played and taught in Chicago, Denver, and Cleveland. I love teaching and have extensive experience as a private teacher with all ages and ability levels. My teaching studio in DC is a comfortable environment and each student gets personalized attention, depending on his or he unique needs. Read More

For beginner's it's always good to start with the basic method books such as Hal Leonard or Alfred. As they progress, they can work on more technical exercises and music theory. Once they are able to grasp the fundamentals, or if they are starting at a more advanced level, it is always good to play a repertoire that includes music that the student is interested in. While some music that I feel is appropriate will be assigned as well, I encourage students to also seek out songs that they want to play themselves in order to keep them interested. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with an intro Piano or Drum Method. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Mike began playing at age 7 on both piano and drums and started performing at age 14. Later he studied voice in college and picked up the banjo as another instrument to have in his repertoire. I have lots of experience giving private lessons, and the optimal time range with respect to a student's attention is 30-45 minutes. I am willing try one-hour lessons, but students usually reach a "wall" around the 45-minute mark. We can surely discuss this prior to beginning the lessons. There are several pathways that I lead my students along with respect to their learning the guitar. I provide some of my students with instruction in sight-reading of classical guitar sheet music. For my older students up to adults, I encourage students to practice for a hour everyday. This also helps with memory, passion, and progress. In piano I love to teach jazz, gospel, musicals, and classical. It brings diversity to the class and more fun! I encourage recitals, showcases, and holiday performances to stay in touch with everyday culture and Music. Also to just showcase what our students have been working hard for all year. Read More
