I use a variety of method books--Bastien, Hal Leonard, John Thompson, and Faber are all favorites of mine for piano. For strings, I stand by the Suzuki method and String Builder series. All lessons are supplemented with sheet music that I print out myself for free on imslp.org, so you get that free of charge! Young children (Ages 0-7), if they are mature enough to sit through a short lesson, learn mostly through play. Read More

I first started teaching violin in high school as a part of the Music Buddies Program, where high school students in the top orchestra would pair with elementary and middle school children in the area who could not afford private lessons. In the past few years, I have taught students of all ages, from just 4 years old, all the way to 76 years old! I love teaching as I am always learning something new from my own students. Read More

For young beginners, I typically start with keyboard exercises and basic lessons in music theory fundamentals and ear training. Upon mastery of a few fundamental skills, students are introduced to a range of compositions that they can choose to learn to study and to play. For all my students at various levels, I assess their abilities and consistently challenge them to sharpen their skills. Now i'm incorporating concentration, breathing, counting and stretching exercises. Read More

Depending on the students goals, current aptitude, and innate abilities I'll select exercises, etudes, and methodologies from a variety of materials. I work from Hal Leonard's, and Berklee's libraries primarily, but most often use a smattering of tools, exercises, and excerpts that have worked for me and past students; creating a lesson plan over time that is better tailored to the student as an individual. One of the major obstacles when learning the guitar versus, say, the piano, are the immediate physical demands. Read More

Dependent on the instrument, I generally use essential musical workbooks as well as my own scales and exercises that create a better base to suppliment the workbooks. I find that these general books are useful to keep the student's growth on track, however, my own sound exercises alllow wind players to usually progress at a quicker rate. For more advanced students, once we have discussed what each student hopes to get out of their lessons and what they generally see themselves doing with their instruments in the next few years, we can decide what pieces to work on and what skills to develop. What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
All I can play, improvise, or imagine.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I am a scientist as well. Have PhD in pharmaceutical organic chemistry.
Music is a big deal of science, as well as art, and feeling.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I do perform classical pieces. My favorite is Bach. Play Well Tempered Clavier , Partitas.
May be one day I perform the Goldberg variations.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I do have MS in Music pedagogy.
I love music, love kids, love to perform,
I also sing in choruses, professional and amateur. I did not chose that degree. The degree chooses me.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
There is no single "thing" to master.
First, you set your goal, what is master means to you.
Than, it is a complex of dedication, persistence, and love.
It is also concentration, will to win, and agin LOVE.
"THE WINNER HAS IT ALL".
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Has my own.( based on Russian school of music) Consist of 5-10 lessons( printed), depending on student capabilities.
I prefer real methods, written by Bach, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, William Gillock, Scott Joplin, Glenda Austin and much more real composers of old school and modern. as well.
I also use Diller and Quaile music pedagogy, Denes Agay books.
if needed, prefer Alfred and Thompson books, as most authentic.
All tailored to student needs.
When will I start to see results?
May be right away, may be never.
Depends on:
-how much are PARENTS involved in your child musical activities: the younger your child is the more help he or she needs. TRY IT YOURSELF.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My mother was my first teacher of simple song and dances.
Simple lullaby to a baby is a real inspiration that does magic to your child. It is much more than any "motivational talk
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I did not pass the exams for violin for physical reasons (short fingers), and musicality. I do not have an excellent musical ear.
I was offered piano instead. My musical imperfections are greatly improved with years of of training in different musical disciplines.
However my hand problem was the one, that not allow me to continue as a concert pianist.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
My accomplishments
-My former students, to whom I taught life lesson of freedom, freedom of expression in music. My recent students, to whom I continue to teach this philosophy.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice every day. It could take any time from 15 min. to 15 h.
Fingers are not readily made for moving around a key board. Need to build up specific muscles and постуре support for your fingers.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Just take your child to life concerts as much as possible, sing and dance with your child at home to any music available, or just to stamping, clapping, or using anything handy to beat the rhythms.
Have fun withy your child, making any live music...
You'll see, when to start lessons and on what instrument.
