Every student is different, and every student has a different level of ability, interests, etc. I find it's important to be mindful of what each student needs at any given moment in their musical journey. Part of this involves asking vital questions and assessing each student's innate musicality before proceeding with materials. Some kids are very precocious are best suited for materials intended for adult beginners. Sometimes students who are seniors feel very fulfilled by learning fundamental skills with simplified showtune melodies. Read More

Michael B

Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice

Michael's approach to voice training is grounded in physiological and developmentally appropriate techniques. While this does not necessarily preclude any particular style of music, he believes very strongly that vocal health and well-being should take precedence in one's study of singing and that it is good for students to gain a diverse musical experience. It is very important that each student is comfortable with their playing ability and progression. I like to set realistic goals when it comes to performing and practicing. No matter the level and ability I always encourage that a student is excited and determined about their progress. It makes a big difference with the teacher and student. Creating that bond with the student is very beneficial. It is my duty to have students leaving inspired, confident and excited! Read More

For young beginners, I generally will start with a beginning method book (such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements) but the book will depend on the instrument as well. For older students, I want to know what kind of music they enjoy playing or listen to, and guide them along to reach their goals--whether that be to play in a band, write and record an album, or just become a better player! Instruments: Piano

Teaching is my passion! Currently I work as a teacher at Washington Japanese school and other music organization and am very comfortable to work for kids. I love to find their music talent and develop their piano skill and expression. I gained my piano skill by taking 12 year private lessons. My piano and Russian language skill enabled me to work with Russian musicians. Especially in 1996 I worked as an interpreter/assistant for Master class lessons by Prof. Read More

Instruments: Piano Drums Keyboard

I began my teaching journey at my local church and later expanded to formal private lessons at home. One of the key challenges I faced was teaching piano to children as young as five years old. However, seeing how quickly they could assimilate music at such an early age has been incredibly rewarding. I emphasize the importance of regular practice for all students, especially younger ones, as perseverance and patience are essential values in developing strong piano skills and becoming accomplished musicians. Instruments: Piano Music Keyboard

My goal with each student is to specialize each lesson to each student's needs and give students the tools to be able to play the music they enjoy. For all of my students, both children and adults, I incorporate theory, technique, ear training, and musicality into the lessons. For beginning piano students, I use a combination of books from Alfred's and Faber. At the same time, I emphasize proper finger technique, shape, and position. Read More

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I tend to start with warm-up exercises on a practice pad with a metronome, starting slow and speeding up. Then I get into the "work out" portion, where I push into faster tempos to test and improve my technique. After practice pad work, I'll move to the drumset. This is where my routine is more flexible. I generally pick one or two things to practice, which could be playing beats in a certain style, practicing different sticking patterns and fills, or playing along to either songs or backing tracks. Again, I make sure to use a metronome and practice these things at various tempos.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition from the University of Kansas. Ever since I was in high school, I loved writing music for bands I was in. I had an understanding of basic theory concepts, but I wanted to greatly expand my knowledge of theory and compositional concepts so I could write better music in more diverse styles. This is why I chose to pursue a degree in composition, and I'm so glad I did! Because of my education, I am now able to write for many types of instruments and expand upon simple ideas in any way I see fit.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I weren't a musician, I would probably be a programmer. When I started college, I was actually dual majoring in Music Composition and Computer Science! I quickly became overwhelmed with my coursework and ultimately decided to pursue music alone, but I still find programming interesting. However, even if I did end up pursuing Computer Science instead, I would almost certainly still be playing music. It's too important to me to give up completely! In that case, I'd most likely go to jam sessions and try to be in a band so I could play shows on weekends.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I love playing in almost any style, but some of my favorite stuff to play is in the neo-soul/hip-hop genre. Specifically, beat styles inspired by J Dilla, Erykah Badu, and D'Angelo. There's a certain swagger to the style that is an absolute joy to play on the drums. Ultimately though, I think everything I play is informed by jazz. I have studied jazz for years, and it has given me the ability to improvise and communicate musically in basically any style. Even when playing in the aforementioned neo-soul/hip-hop, my musical choices are informed by jazz improvisation.
