Instruments: Piano Voice

There is no set method that works for each student. For young children that are just beginning, I like to start them with the Bastien Piano Basics or Piano Adventures series, but I will supplement these books with other material depending on the student's needs. I like to give beginner students little pieces that will help them understand the fundamentals of music in context so that they are still making music while they learn the basics - this keeps them from getting bored! I believe method books and small pieces of repertoire are an excellent tool for getting beginning students engaged in music. I also aim to tie in my compositional and improvisational skills into the mix; this can permit beginning students who have yet to master technique to express themselves more freely than written notation may allow them to. Piano is a wonderful instrument because it presents limitless possibilities for sound and is very intuitive -- why not use that openness to let your creative potential soar! Read More

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream piece to perform would have to be a full big band reconstruction of Moanin by Charles Mingus. I chose this piece because it takes the listener on a rollercoaster ride that does not seem possible. The key changes and the intensity that comes from the rhythm section gives very simple lines the horns play attitude that is unrivaled in many Jazz recordings. Charles Mingus was also a passionate individual devoted to the music and to get an opportunity to step inside one of his pieces would help one understand his perspective on the music as well as the feeling he put into every note.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I usually spend thirty Minutes warming up with simple exercises to maintain specific techniques important for control of the sticks, I then take time to work on coordination with particular concepts I pull from various ideas that I find interesting at the time. After I become familiar with that particular idea I then try to put it in a another context that stretches the idea into another form so I can expand on my creativity. I then usually work on this until I feel comfortable applying it and then I will play along to songs that come up randomly on YouTube autoplay to solidify the idea in unexpected or unfamiliar settings. After I have worked around the idea enough to feel entirely comfortable I will work on sticking exercises with reading and increasing tempos to work on muscle development and clarity.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
The hardest thing to master on the drum set is the interdependence of limbs, and a misconception is commonly thrown around that each limb needs to act independently, however this causes a problem in that it is more difficult to group certain rhythms together without a focal point. Building beats from the feet to the hands or the hands to the feet creates a focal point that can be a reference for other rhythms to be added to. It is incredibly difficult to conceive four different things happening at once thinking they must be different, but it can be much easier to break things down into an alternating pattern which the feet do, and how that works with that the hands do.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite genre of Music to play is Jazz, and more specifically Jazz that incorporates Latin styles of music because I enjoy the freedom that Jazz enables as well as the groove that Latin music has as a function to create movement within the crowd. Both genres are great in themselves and I enjoy both on a high level, but when they are combined I recognize a greater whole is created that is much more significant than the sum of its parts. There are moments of suspense that get resolved into the most beautiful transitions that enable the listener to experience something that was thought to be not possible in many ways.
