For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar for Kids and Bass for Kids methods. At the same time, I assign exercises that will help develop the students technique. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Often there are students with previous instructors and I have no trouble picking up where the student left off. I can recommend books or a series as well as supplemental skills practice books. I start each student off with the basics once they master the basics of both music theory and performance (this includes concurring any stage fright they may have) then I will allow them to chose their own repertoire and I generally switch back and forth so that every other week is the repertoire of their choosing and the following week is continued progress and visitation on the theoretical and technical aspects.
