I start lessons with new students by asking what they would like to learn and ask what their overall goal is so I can better adjust lessons to achieve the students hopes and goals. For beginner students I start with helping them understand the parts of the instrument which I believe can help a student better understand how it works and therefore how to better perform on it. I do believe that while scales, arpeggios, and exercises are very important it is also very important to create fun exercises that are actual music instead of just a scalar excercise, because at least for me playing scales for an hour a day is not why I got into music. As a child of parents who have been/currently are teachers, I understand the utter importance of a good teacher. Personally, I believe the teacher/student relationship can be incredibly impactful and inspiring. I was always very inspired by my favorite teachers and I do not believe I would have progressed as a musician/human without the lessons I learned from my teachers over the years. I always ask my students what they want to learn; I then fit the program to their needs.  If they want to be a rock lead player, than we learn the scales, theory, techniques needed.  If they want to play finger picked folk music, then we focus on those techniques and songs.  I always recommend a strong background in theory and reading but I introduce it when the student is ready for it.  Nothing is learned in a vacumn.  There is always a purpose to anything I teach.
