ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BM, Western Michigan University, Music Education; Choral/General

Overview:
Hello! My name is Mark and I am excited to be your next vocal coach, instrumental or general music instructor. I graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Music Education in 2014. While at WMU I had the privilege to study classical voice and vocal jazz, and even perform in the WMU Bronco Marching Band. Following my graduation I spent a few years performing as a production singer for Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, and also for Carnival Cruise Lines. I currently teach general music at Laura B. Sprague School in Lincolnshire, IL. When I'm not teaching or playing music you can find me enjoying the great outdoors! I can't wait to make music with you!
EXPERIENCE
I have such a strong passion for teaching music because music education has given me endless positive experiences, and I believe I have the responsibility to share my knowledge to as many students as possible who wish to grow musically. I began teaching music as a music student in WMU, specifically in my practicum sessions in 2012. My responsibilities included teaching rhythmic patterns, melodies, note durations and intervals, and experimenting with classroom instruments. Following my practicum sessions, I student-taught elementary music and high school choir in northwest Michigan. I was responsible for teaching grades K-5 general music, and 10-12 high school choir. Following graduation, I spent the last few years as a production singer for various theme parks and even a cruise ship. I look forward to sharing my knowledge of music from my own experiences to those who wish to create their own.
METHODS USED
For all ages, I like to find out what my student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to the keep the lessons engaging and fun. After all, that is what this experience is all about! I customize each lesson for the individual, which means that every student's experience is going to be different from the next. The most consistent method that I teach, no matter the student's interest or motivation, is vocal health and proper singing or playing technique. Whatever your goal is, we'll accomplish it with the right technique. So, what would you like to create?
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by gathering an understanding of each student's prior knowledge on the subject, and setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
