My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 3 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I like to set goals for my students, weather it's perfecting the rudiments, learning a song or a piece in an exercise book. It is important to me that each student progresses at his or her own pace. My methods have broad diversity based on the student. I will show then sheet music, and others I will play different styles of music to show how people play different patterns. It depends on their level of experience. I am willing to take it to the next level to help them recognize their own potential instead of making them feel like playing and practicing is a chore. I began teaching private lessons about 10 years ago, while studying at Ohio State, when people I knew wanted to learn to play the drums. About 6 years ago, I began taking on more students more regularly, and teaching a greater age-range. The majority of my students have studied drum set, but also hand drums, orchestral instruments, mallet percussion, and other percussion instruments. While I was not a Conservatory student, I majored in Psychology through the College party to have enough flexibility to take electives in electronic music, dance classes (for which I also played accompaniment) and eventually work in the student unions Live Sound production crew. My first college band, modern-ska sexted Both Heads Failed, a mix of College rhythm section and Conservatory horn section, was a regular feature at school talent shows, and did a smattering of inter-state touring.
