I started teaching piano to both children and adults in high school. One of them was 5 years old, the other was 6, and another was 13 years old. I've also taught a 19-year-old for a short period of time. For the two kids who were 5 and 6, they were total beginners at piano and did not know anything about piano so my main focus was to introduce them to this instrument and teach them the basics of music theories, scores, and postures. My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes. Mr. Li directed the musical The Wiz at the Tugaloos college of Mississippi and directed the Tchaikovskys Nutcracker Ballet at Madison Cultural Center in Mississippi. Since I moved to California in 2002, I focused on music education; I was director of Waltrips Yamaha Music School, and later a director of the music program and a faculty member at the Arroyo Pacific Academy. Every student is different and learns in different manners, which makes teaching a challenge. This is a challenge that motivates and excites me. I make sure to put all my effort into adapting to every student. Overall, I set reasonable goals for each student that are challenging, yet attainable.
