I like to believe I am very perceptive. Therefore, my first lesson is always about getting to know my student, or at least as much as they let me. Picking up habits in the beginning is a good way to know how to best teach and have a strong professional teacher-student relationship. Over time I can get a sense of what to say and when to say it. I can't stress enough how important practice is. That being said, I do not encourage students to practice material that does not contribute to their goals and interests. That is why I sit down with students and them write out their own practice schedule. The topics on the schedule should relate they're interested in playing.
