For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a simple and fun melody from a song they enjoy. While learning this they will learn to read the notation, the notes they are playing and the scale it is in. This process will continue on into chords and chord shapes from songs they enjoy! Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, we will begin putting together full songs from front to back and delving more into why the music functions as it does. Read More

My lessons typically start with stretching and breathing exercises and then transition to vocal exercises. The vocal exercises serve to strengthen their technique and solidify skills needed to tackle their song. I always ask my students what kind of music they are interested in and find songs to work on that will help strengthen their voice, but also connect with their soul.
