My methodology is somewhat rare, in that I don't have a standardized set of books or resources that I require. I typically focus on fundamentals of musicianship -scales, chords, etc.- as a main focus. as for repertoire, I tend to gravitate to the great American song book/ other Jazz Standards. I am a devoted lifelong musician who loves nothing more than sharing the joy of music with others.  Growing up, I played trombone, euphonium, and tuba with my school bands.  In my college and professional career, I have become proficient on all band instruments.  I especially enjoy trumpet, horn, flute, clarinet, EWI (electronic wind instrument), electric bass, and percussion.  My home studio is state of the art and has quite a lot of instruments! I have over 30 years of teaching experience. I began teaching Music right out of college, instrumental, vocal and general music classes. As a Pastor I still directed musicals and I taught drumers how to play drumset and required them to play for my ministry once they were good enough. I spent many years making my living at teaching instrumental music privately in schools around the area I was pastoring. During the first lesson, I typically try to find out the level of the student. Once the student's level is known (beginners-advance, children-adults), not just playing and or singing ability, but their knowledge of theory, the names of the lines and spaces, the value of notes and rests, the names of the major clefs (treble and bass), etc., then we will better know what method books to engage a student in. I tailor each of my lessons to the needs and desires of each individual. I am fond of using method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Bruce Peterson's Standard of Excellence (or, with school children in a band program, whatever their method book may be), but I also like to bring separate handouts or sheets of exercises, drills, and songs that I have created over the years. I want each lesson to be engaging and fulfilling, and for the student to feel as though they can achieve the tasks set before them for each suceeding lesson. Read More
