For beginning students I focus on getting them used to the first 5 most common notes on their instrument through both beginner methods and technical exercises. I can use whatever method they already have or I can recommend a method for us to study. For beginners, we will start with the fundamentals of playing and producing sound and then jump into the basics of rhythm and articulation. I will recommend books based on your playing experience and if you have any materials already.
